Dance Floor Etiquette
By Lorraine Jacquard
- Good hygiene is a must. Deodorant and breath mints are recommended and considerate.
- Always show your appreciation for the DJ or band with your applause.
- Always introduce yourself to your partner. Always thank your dance partner at the end of the dance.
- Never correct someone’s dancing style unless asked.
- The man or leader is responsible for navigating the floor to keep you both from running into other dancers and furniture.
- All dancers should be mindful of keeping their arms and feet close to their bodies to prevent kicking and jabbing others on a crowded dance floor. Your feet should be kept under your body.
- If you do run into another dancer(s) apologize, no matter who’s at fault.
- It’s OK for women to ask men to dance. Most men say they enjoy being asked.
- Dancers dislike partners who are overly intoxicated or high. Moderation please.
- It’s a nice policy at every event to ask a beginner to dance. They learn faster when they dance with better partners and when they get good they will want to dance with you.
- The line of dance is counter-clockwise. This means dancers generally migrate in that direction when doing waltzes and two steps.
- If you are the kind of person who is offended by sweaty people, get over it. However, dancers who sweat a lot often bring a change of clothes.
- Never dance with a drink in your hand! You can hurt people and ruin their clothes. People who slip on spilt drinks are a major liability concern for club and ballroom owners.
- If you aren’t dancing, please don’t stand on the dance floor.
- Please don’t carry on a conversation on the dance floor during a lesson you and those near you will miss out on valuable instruction.
- HAVE FUN!
